Sunshine Tienda is a Texas resortwear brand built around hand-woven palm sun hats and the tagline “Be Vacation Happy.” You buy directly from its own Shopify store, from roughly 470 independent boutiques and resort shops that stock the line, or, since late 2025, from a physical store in Gruene, Texas. At full retail the product mix runs from $139 palm hats and $98 dresses to $85 sunglasses and $41 earrings, though a large share of the catalog is marked down at any given time.
The company was founded in 2014 by identical twin sisters Laura and Amanda Ernst, who grew up in Houston and spent years in corporate product development before starting the brand. Three separate records line up on the timing. Public WHOIS shows the domain registered through GoDaddy on August 21, 2014, with a registry expiry of August 21, 2027 and registrant details masked behind Domains By Proxy. The brand’s own About page dates the founding to 2014. And local press repeats it: when the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung covered the store opening on December 11, 2025, it described a business that had operated online for eleven years before taking a lease.
The operating entity is named in third-party records rather than on the site. Dun & Bradstreet lists Sunshine Tienda, LLC at 1913 Post Rd Ste 555, New Braunfels, TX 78130-4960, with a named key principal and an employee band of 1–24; LinkedIn puts the headcount at 8. That New Braunfels address is the one the company’s own refund policy gives for mailing returns. The retail store is at a different address — 1623 New Braunfels St. in Gruene, a white house with a wrap-around porch — and it opened on November 28, 2025, as Community Impact reported on December 10, 2025. Store hours as of September 2026 are Sunday 10am–5pm, Monday by appointment, Tuesday–Thursday 11am–6pm and Friday–Saturday 10am–7pm.
What you will not find is a phone number.
Technically the store is a standard Shopify build over HTTPS, accepting Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB, Elo and PayPal, with returns handled through the Redo portal. The privacy policy is Shopify’s full managed template, last updated September 2, 2026 — current and comprehensive, with defined categories of collected data. ScamAdviser rates the site “Very Likely Safe” as of September 2026, citing a valid SSL certificate, more than a decade of operating history and a DNSFilter safe label, while flagging a low Tranco traffic rank and the absence of reviews on popular review sites.
The live catalog runs to 576 products as of September 2026. Hats are the anchor, but they are a minority of the range.
Hats (115 products). The signature item is a palm hat hand-woven in Guatemala. The About Your Hat page states the palms are “all-natural palms sourced from the jungles of Guatemala,” woven by female artisans who also hand-loom the bands, and the company says a purchase ‘contributes to a regular income for more than 100 women in the Guatemalan community’. Many styles carry their maker’s name — Rosita, Berta, Marta, Brenda, Mariella, Jakeline. Around 60 products in the catalog state a UPF 50+ rating, and listings publish brim and crown measurements: the Natural Rancher Palm Hat gives a 3¾-inch brim and 4½-inch crown, the Natural Pool Hat a 5-inch brim. Sizing is the strongest practical argument for the brand — four measured sizes, XXS 53–55 cm, XS/S 55–56 cm, M/L 57–59 cm and XL 60–61 cm, with adhesive foam sizing tape supplied for in-between heads. The line also covers bucket hats, caps, wide-brim styles and kids’ sizes.
Removable straps (16 products). All $48. Six hat styles are titled “(Straps Sold Separately)” and are built with grommets specifically for them, which makes the strap less an accessory than a component sold apart.
Apparel (236 products). Dresses dominate, alongside tops, sets, sarongs, caftans, cover-ups, knitwear and a full kids and baby range. Sizing is XS through XXL for adults — no extended range. Unlike the hats, the apparel listings do not publish a country of origin.
Jewelry (168 products). Mostly earrings, plus necklaces, bangles and charms. The horn pieces are made in Vietnam from water buffalo horn, which the FAQ describes as coming from “traditional cultural methods” with the animals unharmed; earring posts are stainless steel.
Bags, sunglasses and travel goods. Canvas totes, top-handle bags, packing cubes, 11 sunglass styles — eight adult acetate frames at a uniform $85 plus three girls’ styles at $21, sunscreen, travel games and a $325 travel mahjong set.
Gift cards. Digital and physical, from $25 up to $1,000.
Monogramming is offered on sarongs, robes, packing cubes and hat bands, and on-site at the Gruene store. Custom orders are final sale. Corporate and bulk orders are handled by email.

Two things shape what you actually pay. The first is discounting: 254 of the 576 live products — 44 percent — carry a compare-at price as of September 2026, and the most common markdowns are 20%, 40% and 60% off. Sale earrings, for example, sit at $19.20 against a $48 list price. If you are flexible on color and style, the effective price of this brand is meaningfully below its list price most of the time. The catch is that discounted stock is where the return restrictions bite: 52 products are tagged Final Sale, the shipping policy excludes FINAL SALE and “SALE ON SALE” items from returns and exchanges, and the separate Shopify refund policy goes further and says “Only regular priced items may be refunded.”
The second is the strap. Six hats are sold explicitly without straps at $129 to $172, and every strap is $48. A $152 Natural Pool Hat with a strap is a $200 purchase. That is a legitimate design choice — the straps are interchangeable across grommeted styles — but the hat pages lead with the lower number.
There is a loyalty program, Sunshine Rewards, with three tiers: Beachcomber earns 5 points per $1, Island Hopper 7 points, Jet Setter 10 points. Redemptions as of September 2026 are 150 points for free shipping, a 10% off coupon or a $10 off coupon, and 350 points for a $20 off coupon or 20% off. A referral gives your friend $20 off their first purchase and you 400 points. Email sign-up is advertised at 10% off. No public coupon or promotion beyond those is published on the site.
For context on where the money goes at retail, Wolf & Badger carries 46 Sunshine Tienda products in a $78–$249 band, and Saint Bernard stocks the hats independently. Buying through a stockist means their return policy applies instead of the brand’s, which, as the next sections explain, may be the more important consideration here.
The blunt answer is that almost nobody has left a public review anywhere, and the one formal complaint on file has not been answered.
Third-party review volume is close to zero. As of September 2026 there is no Trustpilot profile for the brand’s domain — the review page is not live. SmartCustomer, the platform that now hosts Sitejabber’s profiles, shows a 0.0 rating with zero reviews and the note that the business “hasn’t invited customers to share feedback.” PissedConsumer shows 0. ResellerRatings has no store page for the brand. The BBB profile carries 0 customer reviews. And the brand’s own product pages display no star ratings or review counts at all, even though the loyalty program awards points “for leaving reviews.” ScamAdviser names this directly, noting “We did not find reviews on popular review sites” and calling an internal-only review system “less transparent.”
That is limited review volume as of September 2026, and it should be read as an absence of evidence rather than evidence of good service. Any source presenting a confident aggregate score for this brand — several coupon-farm sites do — is manufacturing a number that the underlying record does not support.
The BBB file is the one hard data point, and it is not good. The BBB profile lists Sunshine Tienda as a non-accredited Online Retailer at the Gruene address with a D+ rating, on a file opened 5/18/2026. BBB attributes the rating to two factors: failure to respond to one complaint filed against the business, and limited operating history in BBB’s own records. The complaint was filed on May 18, 2026 under Product Issues. The customer says a hat arrived with duller colors than the website showed, that starting a return produced four days of automated replies and no return label, and that attempts through the site’s messaging and through Instagram produced “just automated replies.” She asked for a return label and a refund, and wrote that the company “is a fraud and will do whatever they can to delay your return so they can reject it.” As of September 2026 the status is Unanswered.
Keep that in proportion. One complaint against a twelve-year-old business with hundreds of wholesale accounts is a very small sample, and BBB letter grades move violently on single events — the same file with a posted response would likely sit several grades higher. But the substance matters more than the grade: the complaint is about the returns process, and the returns process is exactly where this brand’s terms are most restrictive.
Product feedback, as opposed to service feedback, is positive. The most substantive independent write-up is Thoughts from the Shelf’s sun hat edit, published June 17, 2026, in which three separate contributors recommend Sunshine Tienda styles. The author writes that the “quality and construction for the price is unmatched” on a UPF 50+ hat with a 4.75-inch brim, praises the inclusive size range and the natural palm straw, and notes the brand is woman-owned and supports Guatemalan artisans; a second contributor highlights the foam sizing tape for dialing in fit, and a third likes the bucket-shaped palm style. Retail listings echo that: the Saint Bernard product page for one hat shows a 5.0 rating from two reviews. Those are thin samples too, but they are consistent — the complaints that exist are about getting a refund, not about the hat.
Wholesale acceptance is the strongest indirect signal. Roughly 470 US stockist addresses across 46 states and D.C., plus Saint Bernard, Wolf & Badger and a Faire wholesale storefront, means hundreds of independent buyers have placed orders and reordered. Boutique buyers drop brands that generate returns and complaints. That does not tell you anything about the direct-to-consumer experience, but it does tell you the product itself holds up on a shelf.
On existence and product authenticity, comfortably yes. On the experience of getting your money back if something is wrong, be careful.
What checks out. A domain registered August 21, 2014 and a claimed 2014 founding that matches. An operating entity, Sunshine Tienda, LLC, with a New Braunfels address in Dun & Bradstreet that matches the returns address on the company’s own refund policy. A physical retail store at 1623 New Braunfels St. in Gruene, opened November 28, 2025, independently reported by two local outlets in December 2025. Roughly 470 stockist locations. Distribution through Saint Bernard, Wolf & Badger and Faire. A specific, checkable supply chain with named artisan communities in Guatemala and Vietnam. Shopify checkout over HTTPS with full card-network chargeback rights. A privacy policy updated September 2, 2026. A ScamAdviser verdict of “Very Likely Safe.”
What does not. A D+ BBB rating, driven by a returns complaint from May 18, 2026 that remains Unanswered as of September 2026. No phone number published anywhere on the site. No independent consumer review record on any major platform. And a returns regime where “free” is conditional on buying an add-on whose price is not disclosed until checkout.
The contract is boilerplate, and in one place it is broken. Section 18 of the terms of service — the governing law clause — reads in full: “These Terms of Service and any separate agreements whereby we provide you Services shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of 4347 W. Northwest Hwy, Ste 130PMB181 Dallas Texas US 75225.” That is a private-mailbox address pasted into the slot where a jurisdiction belongs. No state’s law is named, there is no arbitration clause, no class-action waiver and no venue provision. It is the unmodified Shopify template with a placeholder filled in wrong, and it is a third address in circulation alongside the New Braunfels returns address and the Gruene store.
The two return policies disagree. The customer-facing page promises free returns and exchanges within 15 days with the Redo add-on, a 15% restocking fee after that, and nothing after 30 days. The Shopify legal refund policy in the footer says the policy lasts 30 days, that only regular-priced items may be refunded, that exchanges happen only for defective or damaged items, and that you pay return shipping. Both were live as of September 2026. If a dispute ever went formal, you would be arguing about which one governs — and on a site where 44 percent of the catalog is discounted, the sale-item exclusion is not a footnote.
Practical precautions. Measure your head in centimeters before you order and buy to the published size band rather than guessing. Pay by credit card. Decide at checkout whether the Redo add-on is worth its price for the order you are placing — on a $169 hat that may fit or may not, it probably is. Do not remove hang tags until you are certain, because returns without the original attached tags are refused. Start any return inside the 15-day window, not on day 14 of a 30-day assumption. Treat anything marked Final Sale or bought with a stacked discount as non-returnable. If you want a safety net, buy the hat from a stockist or from Saint Bernard or Wolf & Badger and use their return terms instead. And if a return stalls on automated replies, escalate to your card issuer rather than waiting — that is precisely the failure the one BBB complainant described.
Sunshine Tienda earns a 3.6 out of 5 from LegitScout — good, with real reservations. The product and the company behind it are the strong part; the after-sale terms are the weak part.
What earns it: a twelve-year-old Texas business with a named LLC, a matching 2014 domain registration, and a storefront in Gruene you can walk into, opened November 28, 2025 and covered by two local papers. A supply chain the brand documents rather than hides — palm hand-woven in Guatemala by a program the brand says supports more than 100 women, horn jewelry made in Vietnam, exceptions like Honduran palm disclosed on the listing. Four measured hat sizes from 53 cm to 61 cm and a stated UPF 50+ on around 60 products, which is a genuine functional advantage over one-size straw hats. Roughly 470 US stockists plus Saint Bernard, Wolf & Badger and Faire. Flat $5 domestic shipping with no minimum. A current privacy policy, Shopify checkout and a “Very Likely Safe” ScamAdviser verdict. And the only detailed independent product write-up, from June 2026, calls the quality-for-price “unmatched.”
What holds it back: a D+ BBB rating on a file opened in May 2026, caused by a returns complaint the company has not answered. No Trustpilot profile, zero reviews on SmartCustomer, PissedConsumer and BBB, and no ratings on the brand’s own product pages — limited review volume as of September 2026, which makes service quality unproven rather than good. Free returns that require a paid add-on with an undisclosed price, a 15-day free window, a 15% restocking fee after that, a 25% charge for unapproved returns, a hard stop at 30 days, and a hang-tag rule that voids a return outright. Two return policies that contradict each other. A governing-law clause that names a mailbox instead of a jurisdiction. No published phone number. Apparel that stops at XXL. And $48 straps on hats that are built with grommets for them.
Buy from
Yes. It is a real, long-established Texas business rather than a scam storefront, and the paper trail is unusually good for a brand this size. Public WHOIS shows the domain registered through GoDaddy on August 21, 2014, matching the 2014 founding date the company claims. Dun & Bradstreet lists the operating entity as Sunshine Tienda, LLC at 1913 Post Rd Ste 555, New Braunfels, TX 78130-4960 with a named principal — the same street address printed on the company's own returns instructions. The brand opened a physical store at 1623 New Braunfels St. in Gruene, Texas on November 28, 2025, independently reported by Community Impact and the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung in December 2025. Its stockists page lists roughly 470 US retail addresses, and the line is carried by Saint Bernard, Wolf & Badger and Faire. Checkout runs on Shopify over HTTPS and ScamAdviser rates the site 'Very Likely Safe' as of September 2026. The honest caveats are about service, not existence: the BBB rating is D+ with one complaint filed May 18, 2026 still listed as Unanswered, there is no Trustpilot profile and zero reviews on SmartCustomer, PissedConsumer or BBB, and free returns require paying for an add-on at checkout.
As of September 2026 the 46 signature hand-woven palm hats run from $139 to $224 at full price, and the median is $169 — not the entry price the cheapest listings suggest. Typical examples: the Jane Palm Hat and Natural Rancher Palm Hat at $139, the Rosita, Berta, Marta, Brenda, Laguna and Mariella Palm Hats at $169 each, the Carolina Palm Hat at $189, the Olive Bandana Palm Hat at $198, the Ivory America Palm Hat at $215 and the Navy Flora Tile Palm Hat at $224. Adult bucket hats run $129 to $189, with the $129 Natural Bucket Hat the cheapest adult hat on the site; the pool or 'lifeguard' style runs $152 for the Natural Pool Hat and $172 for the Breezy Pool Hat. Kids' hats are $42 to $110 — $42 to $48 for the beachy bucket styles, $98 to $110 for kids' palm hats. Watch the strap line: six styles are titled 'Straps Sold Separately' and every removable strap is $48, so a $152 pool hat becomes $200 with the strap the grommets were added for. Roughly 44 percent of the catalog carries a markdown at any given time, most often 20%, 40% or 60% off, which is where the better-value buys are — but discounted items come with return restrictions.
Returns are free only if you pay for them. The shipping and returns page, as of September 2026, states that the company offers 'unlimited free returns and exchanges within 15 days of the delivery date' when you purchase 'Free Returns & Package Protection with Redo at checkout.' Without that add-on, the same page says you are responsible for the return shipping label cost, which may be deducted from your refund or exchange credit. The price of the add-on is not published on any policy page. After 15 days a 15% restocking fee applies; after 30 days nothing is accepted; returns sent without approval may be mailed back or charged a 25% restocking fee; and items must come back unworn, undamaged, free of scents or makeup, with the original packing slip and with all original hang tags still attached — 'Returns without the original, attached hang tags will not be accepted.' FINAL SALE and 'SALE ON SALE' items are excluded outright. Note also that the separate Shopify legal refund policy linked in the footer states a 30-day window, says 'Only regular priced items may be refunded,' and says you pay return shipping — so the two documents disagree. Returns go to 1913 Post Rd. Ste. 555, New Braunfels, TX 78130, and the returns portal runs on Redo. The add-on is not offered on international orders.
The hats are hand-woven in Guatemala. The brand's hat page says the palms are 'all-natural palms sourced from the jungles of Guatemala,' hand-woven by female artisans who also hand-loom the bands, and says a purchase 'contributes to a regular income for more than 100 women in the Guatemalan community'; many styles are named after the woman who made them. The company is specific enough to flag exceptions — as of September 2026 the Breezy Pool Hat listing notes that its lighter-colored palm is sourced from Honduras while the weaving still happens in Guatemala. Horn jewelry is made in Vietnam; the FAQ says the horn comes from 'traditional cultural methods from Vietnamese Water Buffalo' with the animals unharmed, and earring posts are stainless steel. Wolf & Badger, which stocks the line, applies its Happy Worker, Independent Brand and Skilled Artisan badges to the brand. The apparel side is less documented — the site does not publish country of origin for dresses, tops or bags the way it does for hats.
As of September 2026 domestic standard shipping is a flat $5 with no minimum order, advertised in the site's top banner and confirmed in the FAQ. Allow 3–4 business days for processing plus 3–4 business days in transit for standard service. Express orders placed before 12PM Central are processed the same business day, or the next business day if placed later, and arrive in 1–2 business days; the policy page adds that expedited shipping leaves the warehouse within 2 business days. If an order contains a backordered item the entire order is held and shipped together unless you email to request a split shipment. International shipping is offered — the FAQ says to check out as normal — but the Redo returns and package protection add-on cannot be purchased on orders shipping outside the United States, so international buyers pay their own return shipping. EU customers are separately covered by a 14-day right of withdrawal, with the return label cost deducted from the refund.
It is a full resortwear line, not a hat shop. As of September 2026 the live catalog runs to 576 products: 236 apparel items (dresses, tops, sets, sarongs, caftans, cover-ups, knits, kids' and baby pieces), 168 jewelry items, 115 hats and hat accessories, plus bags, sunglasses, travel goods and a few oddities like a $325 travel mahjong set. Representative full-retail pricing: adult dresses span $98 to $298 with a $158 median, the largest cluster at $142 to $178 and the Harbor Plaid and Pomegranate Floral Charlotte Dresses at $198; canvas totes are $68 to $98; top-handle bags list at $124 and $138, though both were discounted to $84 and $94 in September 2026; the eight adult acetate sunglass styles are all $85, with three girls' styles at $21; earrings run $41 to $78 with a $48 median and statement necklaces reach $138; and gift cards run from $25 to $1,000. Apparel sizing is XS through XXL with no extended range, plus separate baby, toddler and kids sizing. The Gruene retail store also carries in-store exclusives and offers on-site monogramming.
